Tokyo.

Peter sits on an aluminum table while Hirako the vet sits on a stool behind him, his squinting eyes studying the wound to Peter’s shoulder while removing pieces of the shattered bullet with medical tweezers. The gash on his flank is already sewn up and bandaged.

In the background, a dog whines in its cage, a sure sign that this isn’t a hospital but a twenty-four-hour veterinary surgery.

The outside buzzer sounds, pulling Hirako’s attention toward the door. He doesn’t say anything, merely gets up and leaves the room. Peter thinks he knows who it is, and when the vet returns, it is confirmed when he sees the bald head of Akechi Akiyama accompanying him, his fingers gripping his cane, the duck’s bill slipping between his fingers.

The reticent Hirako returns to the stool and continues with his work. Akechi retrieves another stool from a corner, brings it over, and takes a seat. His brow furrows, lips tight as if biting back an unfavorable comment.

“So she didn’t kill you, then,” he says dryly, his immovable eyes staring at Peter. “That is a shame.”

Peter remains silent, only wincing when Hirako’s tweezers dig into his flesh.

“You are running out of chances, Azrael-san,” Akechi goes on.

Peter has had enough of this man and his master. In a snappish tone, he says, “Just tell me who the next target is.”

Akechi breathes out. Then, “Gladly. The next target is a man by the name of Kenji Kiobi. He is the last before Tanaka-shachou, so this could be your final chance.”

The look on Akechi’s face tells Peter all he needs to know about what it could cost him if he misses it.

“Who is Kenji Kiobi?” he asks.

“He is the son of a billionaire industrialist. He attended school with Tanaka and has several investments in Tanaka-Corp, being one of its major shareholders.”

“So he’s just another megalomaniac like all the others, then?”

“Not quite,” Akechi replies. “Kiobi-san is extremely rich but has never really worked in his life.”

“Trust fund kid?”

“Yes. Kenji comes from one of the most prestigious families in the whole of Japan. The youngest of four sons, he found himself a little left behind. While his brothers went into the family company, Kenji preferred to spend his days traveling around in his yacht and doing… well, not much.”

“Not much,” Peter repeats in a sardonic tone. “So where is this lazy playboy currently doing not much?”

“You are in luck. He is on his yacht, anchored just off of Tokyo Bay, at the entrance point. However,” Akechi adds in a sinister undertone, “Tanaka-shachou has decided to play more hands.”

Peter narrows his eyes. “Does that mean what I think it does?”

“And what is that, Azrael-san?”

“That he’s sending in more assassins.”

“It does,” Akechi replies with a nod of his egg-shaped head. “After your recent failures, he is hedging his bets.”

“Shouldn’t surprise me,” Peter mutters, glancing at the buzzing fluorescent light overhead as it flickers. “And who are these ‘others’?”

“They are professionals,” Akechi replies. “Highly skilled, like yourself. You should consider them competition.”

“Competition, huh?” Peter flexes his shoulder, grimacing as the pain radiates down his arm.
